JOPLIN, Mo. — Sara E. "Sally" Ray, 92, of Joplin, Mo., died at 6:39 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013, at College View Manor in Joplin.

She was born April 15, 1921, at West Middlesex, Penn., to Walter Price and Francis (Dunlap) Phibbs. After graduating high school, she went to college for two years and then nursing school for three years, becoming a registered nurse.

She was united in marriage to Dr. Howard R. Elliott. He preceded her in death in 1976. She then married Darrell M. Ray. He preceded her in 2007.

Mrs. Ray worked as a Registered Nurse at Youngstown Hospital and SEK Headstart, where she was the Director of Medical Activities for 20 years. She retired in 2000.

She lived in Youngstown, Ohio, Pittsburg, Kan. and Fort Scott, Kan., before moving to Joplin.

Membership was held in the First Presbyterian Church at Fort Scott, Kan.; the Daughters of the Nile; and PEO.

Survivors include a son, George F. Elliott, of Sydney, Australia; a daughter, Sally Ann Borello, of Joplin; two step-sons, Steven Ray, of Tulsa, Okla. and David Ray, of Bartlesville, Okla.; a step-daughter, Judi Ray, of DeSoto, Texas; two grandsons; three great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and several step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; a daughter, Pamela Toombs; and a granddaughter, Jennifer Toombs.

Services will be 11 a.m., Wednesday (Aug. 7) at the Brenner Mortuary, with Fr. Larry Parker officiating. Burial will follow in the Highland Park Cemetery. Friends may call after 10 a.m. Tuesday to sign the register book.

The family suggests memorials to the Mirza Shrine Transportation Fund. These may be left at or mailed to the Brenner Mortuary, 114 E. 4th St., Pittsburg, KS 66762.
