Lyle E. McMechan

HUMBLE, TX —

Lyle E. (L.E.)  McMechan passed away on Oct. 3, 2012, in Humble, Texas, where he and his wife, Susan, had moved after his retirement.

Lyle was born in 1943, at Jane Chinn Hospital, Webb City, Mo., to Billie Gene and Ada Maude Rowland. Ada Maude Rowland died November 1944, and Billie Gene Rowland died October 1993. Lyle was adopted and raised by Lawrence E. and Alice R. McMechan and lived most of his life in Carterville/Joplin Mo. Both of his adoptive parents also preceded him in death, Lawrence in 1971 and Alice in 1998.

He attended Carterville Schools, graduating in 1961, and was very active in sports and extracurricular activities. He built and flew model airplanes and was a volunteer firefighter with the Carterville Fire Department as a teenager. He had a wonderful singing voice and sang in a quartet "The Four for the Lord" as a young man and also played the trumpet.

He enlisted in the Air Force in 1962, and served in the Philippines and North Africa, receiving training as a military policeman. After the service, Lyle returned to the Carterville/Joplin area where he worked as a police officer and detective for the Joplin Police Department and later joined the Jasper County Sheriff's Department. He then worked at St. John's Hospital as an electrician for many years, taught HVAC at Pittsburg State University and worked the rest of his career with Cardinal Scales in Webb City, until his retirement.

Lyle married Velma Russow in 1964, and they had three daughters. They divorced in 1982, but he continued to be good friends with both her and her family.

He is survived by his oldest daughter, Holly Hukill, Carl Junction, Mo., and her husband, Duane, children, Josh and Justin Weber and stepson, Stefan; his middle daughter, Alisa Mathis, Joplin, Mo., and her husband, Gregg and their daughter, Velshi Smith, her husband, Travis Smith and stepdaughter, Amoura; and his youngest daughter, Leah Camp, Monett, Mo., and her husband, Dennis and their children, Alice, Sadie and E.J.

He married Susan Rush in 2002, she resides in Humble, with Lyle's stepson, Brian Rush. He is also survived by his brother, Butch Rowland and his wife, Kathy and their children and grandchildren; and his stepmother, Connie Blanton; siblings, Nancy Scott, Michelle Mitcham and Carrol William Rowland, of Conyers, Ga.; and many other family members and friends.

Lyle spent many hours hunting, fishing and playing golf in his spare time, but enjoyed nothing more than to spend time with his children and especially his grandchildren. He was always willing to lend a hand to his family and friends.  He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend and he will be missed by all.

Per his wishes, Lyle will be cremated. A graveside service will be conducted at a later date.

Condolences may be sent to the family at 2309 East 32nd Street, Joplin, MO 64804.
