BAXTER SPRINGS, KS —
Alex Gabe Nichols, age 52, of Baxter Springs, Kan., passed away Nov. 30, 2012, at his home.
Gabe was born in Baxter Springs, Sept. 25, 1960, to Coy and Norma Nichols and graduated from Baxter Springs High School in 1978. He attended Pittsburg State University and attained both bachelor and master's degrees in history. Gabe applied his skills as a historian by preparing histories of the town of Baxter Springs, as well as the Cherokee Indian presence in the region. He served on the boards of the Baxter Springs Historical Society and the Baxter Springs Public library.
He is survived by his brother, Randolph Nichols and his sister-in-law, Mary Lou Sallee, of Westford, Mass.; nephews, Anthony Nichols, of Billerica, Mass., and Nathan Nichols, of Reston, Va.; as well as numerous cousins and countless devoted friends.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 5, at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Galena, Kan. Father J.W. Stephenson will officiate. Family will receive friends from 5 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, at Derfelt's Baxter Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Diabetes Association in care of the funeral home.
Pallbearers for the service are Greg Case, Shane Helm, Will David, Nicholas Kyle, John Burrows, Joe Martin and Jeff Webb.
