JOPLIN, MO —

Bettye J. Sharpe, age 85, of Joplin, Mo., passed away early Friday, Nov. 30, 2012, at Mercy Hospital in Joplin.

Bettye was born on Feb. 22, 1927, in Shreveport, La., the daughter of George and Edna (Ashford) Gillian. She has been a long-time area resident, she worked as a legal secretary until 1982. Bettye attended the First Presbyterian Church in Joplin, and was active in the Women's Club, the Legal Secretaries Association and was a volunteer for the American Red Cross.

She married Joseph C. Sharpe on Sept. 30, 1949, in Shreveport. He preceded her in death on March 8, 2002.

She is survived by three daughters, Sheila Sharpe, of Springfield, Mo., Johnette Zimmerman and her husband, Bob, of Joplin, and Nadya Starr and her husband, Bob Williams, of Pasadena, Calif.; one son, Jimmy Sharpe and his wife, Anne, of Destin, Fla.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and her beloved cats, Ilsa and Igor.

The family would like to send a special thanks to Heart to Heart for their support in mom's last days, especially, Monica, Ina, Sarah, Alice, Martha and staff.

To our beloved mother, we love you. You will be in our hearts forever. Rest in peace.

Memorial services have been scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, at the Mason-Woodard Chapel.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Crematory.
