James "Son" Robinson

TRAVELERS REST, SC —

James "Son" Robinson, passed away on Nov. 4, 2012.

He was born in Eldorado, Okla., on Nov. 24, 1926, to George and Effie Robinson. His family moved to Seneca, Mo., when he was a young boy because his father took a job as a Depot Agent for the railroad.

Son joined the Navy when he was 17 and turned in into a 22 year career. It was during that time, while on leave, that he met the love of his life Mary Ellen Hood at Redding's Mill swimming pool in Joplin. They married on June 30, 1958. While in the Navy, they traveled and lived all over the United States. They also lived in Italy for three years where they made many lifelong friends. After his career in the Navy, Son went to work for G.E. Medical Systems as an X-ray Equipment Tech, living between Joplin and Florida for most of their wonderful life together.

In his earlier years Son enjoyed playing golf and tennis. For his entire life, he loved fishing and being by the water. He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved making people laugh. He spent the last few years in Travelers Rest, S.C., to be close his son, Scott and daughter-in-law Roni. It was there that he began writing about his youth in Seneca. The Seneca Dispatch ran a series of his articles called "Growing Up In Seneca" and as a result, he received numerous letters and phone calls from others who grew up in the area. The response he received and the stories from others gave him great joy.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ellen Hood who passed away on April 11, 2012; his parents; and  his sisters, Betty Robinson and Phyllis Madaus. He was interred next to his beloved wife in Sanford, Fla., on Nov. 10, 2012.

Survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Roni Robinson, Travelers Rest, S.C., who will always love and miss their parents.
