Edward H. "Tony" August

JOPLIN, Mo. — Edward H. "Tony" August, age 85, passed away at his home with his wife at his side at 1:27 a.m. Friday, March 28, 2014, following a period of declining health.

Ed was born March 18, 1929, in Independence, Mo. His parents were Edward H August Sr. and Mary Elizabeth (Morgan) August. He had lived in Joplin since 1958.

He was a veteran of US Army, serving as a cryptographer in Japan and Korea.  He earned a General Business degree from the University of Missouri, Columbia, Mo., becoming a Certified Public Accountant. He practiced accounting at his own business in Joplin from 1972-2012, later merging with Baker, Davis and Roderique CPA, Joplin. In addition to being a Mason since 1951 and currently belonged to Kiwanis, Roughnecks and Grand Lake Sailing Club.  He also served on the Board of Directors at Missouri Southern State University from 2002-2012.

Ed was married to Sue (Susie) Speakman on Oct. 5, 1963, in Carl Junction, Mo., at First Methodist Church.  She survives.

Additional survivors include two sons, Edward M. August (wife, Stephanie), Joplin and Robert S. August (wife, Keri), Bel Aire, Kan.; one daughter, Stephanie A. August (husband, Dewayne Perry), Springfield, Mo.; and grandchildren, Morgan E. August, Grant E. August, Lauren B. August, Landon L. Sturgis and Emily A. Sturgis.

Ed will be cremated with arrangements entrusted to friends of three generations, Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena, Kan.

A memorial graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, March 31, at Osborn Cemetery, Joplin. At Eds request the family will receive friends at a reception at Granny Shaffers Restaurant, 2728 N Range Line Road, from 5 to 7 p.m.

A register book is located at Parker Mortuary, Joplin, for friends to sign during regular business hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Joplin School Foundation, P.O. Box 128, Joplin, 64802 or in care of the funeral home.

He had an extraordinary life filled with extraordinary friends.
