James E. Copeland

BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. — James E. Copeland, 89, passed from this life on Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at Quaker Hill Skilled Nursing Facility.

James was born on Feb. 21, 1924, at Elizabeth, Ark., to the union of Charlie A. and Gladys C. (Shrable) Copeland. They precede him in death. After attending the eighth grade, James joined the United States Army, serving in World War II. He moved to the Baxter Springs area in 1955, working as a mechanic for Yellow Freight, retiring in 1979, after 24 years of work.

James loved the outdoors, he looked forward to planting his garden every spring and was known for his Okra. When he wasn't in the garden he would frequently visit the river or strip pits with his boat and fish for Blue Gill. He was also know to spend many hours sitting under his carport and visit with friends as they stopped by to see him. He was an avid listener of Blue Grass music and wrote seven songs in which one was produced. James accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior at the age of 89 and was baptized at Quaker Hill.

James is survived by one daughter, Darlene Johnson; one sister, Vernal Huett; several grandchildren; special friends, the Krokroskia family; along with a host of friends.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, April 29, at Derfelt's Baxter Chapel. Pastor Audie Tash will officiate. Burial will follow in the Lowell Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 28, at Derfelt's Baxter Chapel.
