Phyl Hamilton

JOPLIN, Mo. — Phyllis J. "Phyl" Hamilton, age 84, Joplin, passed away at 4:40 a.m. Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at Webb City Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Phyl was born Aug. 25, 1928, in Webb City, Mo., to the late Roy Leon Long and Elizabeth Merriman Long and had lived in the Joplin and Webb City area all of her life.

She was a graduate of Webb City High School and attended Joplin Business College. She worked for years at the former Shanks Army Surplus Store, where she was thought to have bought more than what she sold. After her children were grown, she began her career as a copy attendant at St. John's Regional Medical Center. She retired in 1997 after 17 years of service.  

Phyl was a member of St. John's Prestige and was a former member of Iron Gates Christian Church.  She supported M.D.A. and rode with artist Nick Frising on his Harley Davidson motorcycle the year he was selected as Grand Marshall of the annual MDA Telethon.  

She married Virgil Eugene Hamilton on May 29, 1948, in Webb City. He preceded her in death on Oct. 30, 1985.  

Phyl was also preceded in death by a son, David Hamilton; a grandson, Nick; a half sister; and one brother.

Survivors include a daughter, Regina Lane and her husband, David; grandchildren, Rachel Lane-Long and her husband, Stanley, Jennifer Straayer and Felicia Hamilton; great-grandchildren, Cole, Gabriel, Joselynn, Jacklynn, Jessica, Evan, Tom, Paris, Nick and Reagan; one stepbrother, Robert Jack; and lifelong extended family, Karen and Kenny Royer, Wednesday and Will Arend and Glenn, Jennifer, Kendall, Ronnie Crosswhite and Fern Hawkins.

Services are planned for Friday at 2 p.m. at Parker Mortuary Chapel. Interment will follow in Osborne Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Tom Lane, Cole Mead, Stanley Long, Glenn Crosswhite, Will Arend and Paris Lane. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Parker Mortuary Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to the M.D.A. or to Mercy Prestige, both in care of Parker Mortuary.
