GALENA, Kan. —
Shirley Ann Eckhardt, age 79, passed away at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014, at her home following an illness.
She was born March 21, 1934, in Joplin, Mo. Her parents were Neal Duvall and Catherine Marie (Aubert) Fletcher. She had lived at her home the past 53 years.
She graduated from Cherokee County Community High School, Columbus, Kan., in 1951. She was a member of Smithfield Christian Church, Smithfield, Mo. She had served as church pianist at Lawton, Kan. She had also been active with the Cherokee County 4-H Club, Glittering Stones 4-H and the SEK Poultry Association. Among her interests and hobbies were raising animals (including llamas and dogs), gardening (especially flowers) and arts and crafts.
Shirley was married to Orin Lee Eckhardt on Nov. 9, 1952, in rural Galena. He survives.
Additional survivors include three sons, Dennis Eckhardt (wife, Sue), Columbus, Shane Eckhardt (wife, Tammie), rural Galena, and Bart Eckhardt (wife, Jennifer), rural Galena; her twin sister, Betty York, rural Galena; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant brother, Roy Phil Fletcher.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, at Smithfield Christian Church, Smithfield, under the direction of Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena. Tom Goettel will officiate. Burial will be in Mound Cemetery, rural Galena. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, at Smithfield Christian Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Cherokee County 4-H or Harden Hospice in care of the funeral home.
