WEBB CITY, Mo. —
Wallace Dale Austin, 89, of Webb City, passed away on Friday, Dec. 21, 2012, at his residence.
He was born on Jan. 21, 1923, to Cleve Austin and Roena Austin in Gravette, Ark. He enlisted in the Merchant Marines, United States Coast Guard in 1942 and was discharged in 1946. He saw action in the Atlantic, Pacific, Mediterranean, and Middle East war zones. Dale was awarded the Combat Bar. He served as Navigator on several ships, and was discharged with rank of Ensign.
Dale lived in Kansas City for several years working for the J.E. Dunn Company, Bendix Company, and J.C. Penney Company. He returned to Webb City in 1972 and retired from J.C. Penney Company in 1985, as Maintenance Supervisor. Dale belonged to V.F.W. Post 7630, American Legion Post 322, and the Webb City Nutrition Center, serving on the advisory council as president for many years.
He married Dorothea Shaeffer on April 3, 1953 and she preceded him in death on Oct. 4, 1986.
Dale then married Wanda Dunaway on Aug. 25, 1990, and she survives at the home. He is also survived by his children, Susan Peterson, of Webb City, Steve Dunaway, of Joplin, Mike Dunaway, of Leawood, Kan.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren, who all love him and adored him very much; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 26, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Simpson Funeral Home in Webb City. A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 1 p.m. until service time. Burial will be in Carl Junction Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Avalon Hospice or the Webb City Senior Citizen Center in his memory.
