JOPLIN, Mo. —
Gaylon W. "G.W." Jackson, age 69, of Joplin, Mo., passed away Wednesday Dec. 19, 2012, following a sudden illness.
G.W. was born on Sept. 2, 1943, in Joplin, the son of the late William Raymond and Virginia Irene (Wiedeman) Jackson.
He has been a lifetime resident of Joplin, and very proud that his grandparents founded Wiedeman Ice Cream in 1904, the first ice cream business in Joplin, and that his family residence has remained on the property where it was originally located.
As a young boy G.W. became an Eagle Scout. He graduated from the Missouri Military Academy in 1961, and from Wentworth Military College with a degree in land surveying. G.W. began his career with Finley Engineering in Lamar, Mo. He then went to work several years for Allgeir Martin and Associates. In 1980 he became owner/operator of Southwest Engineering, and in 1991, the family opened Railroad Salvage & Restoration, Inc. He was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge #501, the 1859 Presidents Society of the Missouri Military Academy, the Joplin Masonic Lodge #345 AF & AM, he was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, and a member of the Abou Ben Adhem Shrine. He was also a member of the Webb City Liars Club.
G.W. had a great love for animals, his dalmations were among some of the most fortunate. He was a philanthropist, he was a loyal donor to the Joplin Humane Society, and he assisted with many local charity events.
He married Lee Moser on Aug. 15, 1977, in Puerto Rico, and she survives. Also surviving is their son, Ryan Jackson; their daughter, Mary Romero and her husband, James; their grandson, Wyatt Romero, all of Joplin; his sister Linda Ray Linhoff and her husband, Thomas R., Kansas City, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday Dec. 27, at Mason-Woodard Chapel. Pastor Roy Biswell will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery. The pallbearers will be Gary Wade, Luis Serrano, Charlie Noble, Nick Davis, James Browning, Daniel Whitworth, Larry Warren, and Richard Arnold. The honorary pallbearers will be Bud Gehrs, Vernon Lawson and Ron Ramey. The family will receive friends 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Mason-Woodard Mortuary.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Masonic Lodge #345 AF & AM. or the Joplin Animal Adoption & Resource Center in care of the mortuary.
Arrangements are under the direction of Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Crematory.
