JOPLIN, MO —
Margaret Emilie (Kaste) Johns, age 86, of Joplin, Mo., went to be with her Lord and Savior at 5:45 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013, at St. Luke's Nursing Center in Carthage, Mo.
Born Aug. 29, 1926, in Chicago, Ill., she was the daughter of the late Elmer Kaste and Helene (Lechner) Kaste. She graduated from Luther Institute in Chicago in 1944, and received her Bachelor of Science in Education from Concordia University in River Forest in 1947.
Margaret was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Carthage. She was a teacher and principal and supervised student teachers at various Lutheran schools in the Chicago metropolitan area. She served at various parishes throughout the Midwest as a member of the Altar Guild and as a church office administrator. She was a hospital volunteer at Lutheran Medical Center in St. Louis, Mo. Margaret lived in various locations, serving alongside her faithful husband, David, in parishes in Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Edmonton, Alberta Canada and Oklahoma, retiring to Joplin in 1995.
Margaret was a devoted mother to her daughter, Susan and son-in-law, Robert. She enjoyed gardening and cooking and teddy bears.
She married Rev. Dr. David Johns on Dec. 26, 1954, in Chicago. He survives.
Additional survivors include her daughter, Susan Johns-Smith and husband, Robert, of Pittsburg, Kan.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Carthage. Pastor James Schnackenberg will officiate. Interment will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery in Webb City, Mo. The family will receive friends at Parker Mortuary in Joplin, from 3 to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lutheran Hour or Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, both in care of the mortuary.
