JOPLIN, MO —
Mr. Gary Morris McAferty, 70, of Joplin, Mo., departed this life on Wednesday, evening, Jan. 9, 2013, at Spring River Christian Village in Joplin, after a brief illness.
Gary entered this life on June 28, 1942, in Joplin, born to the union of the late David Morris and Florence Esther (Barry) McAferty. He was raised in Joplin, and was a 1960 graduate of Joplin High School. He served his country proudly and faithfully in the United States Navy from Jan. 8, 1961, until being honorably discharged on Jan. 8, 1965.
On Aug. 4, 1978, in Joplin, he was united in marriage to Judith Ann (Peterson) Johnson and together they have shared the last 34 years. He and Judy resided in North Carolina, Washington, and Oklahoma, before returning home to Joplin in 1996.
When they returned to Joplin, he joined Russell Belden Electric Company, where his father and grandfather had both started their careers. He was born and raised in the electrical wholesale business and was still working full-time before he became ill. He enjoyed Missouri Southern Basketball, especially the Lady Lions and he and Judy had their regular seats behind the Lion bench at all the home games. They also enjoyed golf and long weekends in Branson. Gary was a member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Joplin.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, David J. McAferty.
Gary is survived by his wife, Judy McAferty, of the home; three sons, Kevin B. Johnson and wife, Diane Duffy, of Graham, N.C., Kyle G. Johnson and wife, Melissa, of Princeton, Ind., and Kraig R. Johnson and wife, Annette, of Joplin; four grandchildren, Sarah, Ben, Lauren and Ashley Johnson; a sister, Barbara Nichols, of Midlothian, Va.; as well as a host of other family and friends.
Funeral Mass for Mr. McAferty will be held on Saturday morning, Jan. 12, at 10 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Joplin, with Father J. Friedel officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in the Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery in Joplin. Those honoring his life by serving as pallbearers are Ivan Johnson, Bill Duke, Dave Dillon, Rick Burlingame, Doug Burlingame and Mark Ramsour. Maryann Mitts and Ronda Hubbard will be serving as honorary pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers memorial are being directed to St. Peter's Catholic Church building fund and contributions may be left at the mortuary office.
