Mary Ann Cook

MIAMI, Okla. — Mary Ann Pooler Cook, age 77, passed from this life into eternity on July 25, 2013, at her home in Miami, Okla.

She was born Jan. 8, 1936, in Miami, to Sherman and Flava Ervin and was lovingly adopted by Charles and Faye Pooler after the death of her mother during childbirth.

She graduated from Miami High School and received her bachelors degree in education from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Okla. She was an elementary school teacher in Miami Public Schools for 29 years. After her retirement, she continued teaching children in Sunday School at the Immanuel Baptist Church. She was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church for many years where she enjoyed serving her Lord.

She married Jack Cook on Dec. 21, 1958. They were married 54 Years.

She is survived by her husband, Jack, of the home. She is also survived by four children, Lynda Smith and husband, Randy, of Anderson, Mo., Sandy Schemahorn and husband, Allen, of Joplin, Mo., David Cook and wife, Kim, of Union, Ky., and Darren Cook and wife, Missy, of Neosho, Mo.; and a nephew, whom she helped raise, Leland Elliott and wife, Marie, of Grand Island, Neb. She is also survived by seven grandsons and one granddaughter, whom she dearly loved. They are Tyler Smith, of Bentonville, Ark., Caleb Tinker, of Springfield, Mo., Kelsey Smith, of Joplin, Joshua and Jared Cook, of Union, Brett and Brock Cook, of Neosho, and Daniel Elliott, of Sioux City, Iowa. She is also survived by  sisters, Alzada Heatherly, of Quapaw, Okla., and Shirlene Bolin, of Baxter Springs, Kan.; two brothers, Buzz Ervin, of Miami, and Butch Ervin, of Columbia, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and two brothers.

Funeral Services will be Tuesday, July 30, at 1 p.m. at Immanuel Baptist Church in Miami. Rev. Butch Miller and Rev. Gerald Dyer will officiate. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Tyler Smith, Caleb Tinker, Joshua Cook, Jared Cook, Brett Cook, Bo Bergen and Brock Cook and honorary pallbearers will be Harrell Post and Darian Thompson. Interment will be in Ottawa Indian Cemetery, southeast of Miami. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Paul Thomas Funeral Home in Miami.

In lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Immanuel Baptist Church of Miami or the Humane Society of Miami.
