George A. Spiva, Jr.

Knoxville, Tenn. — George (Tony) Anthony Spiva, Jr. PhD, 85, of Knoxville, Tenn. Passed away Friday, July 19, 2013.

He was born on Jan. 11, 1928, in Joplin, Mo., where he was raised. Tony obtained a B.S. Degree and a M.A. Degree from the University of Missouri and completed his PhD work in Economics at the University of Texas at Austin. Tony then moved to Knoxville, where he taught for over 50 years as a Professor of Economics at the University of Tennessee, retiring at the end of the fall semester of 2012.

During Several leaves of absence, he participated as a consultant and adviser in world-wide economic projects and programs in Indonesia, Peru, Greece, Australia and New Zealand. He was also a consultant to an Asian Development Bank project in Indonesia and spent six months in China in 2006, lecturing at Sichuan University and talking with Chinese bankers and businessmen.

Tony was the Philip Moffit Distinguished Scholar in Economics at the University of Tennessee and appeared on the A&E Channel, CNN, Moneyline, with Lou Dobbs and the History Channel. In addition to his passion for teaching, Tony was an avid fly fisherman whose adventures took him all over the world including Russia, New Zealand and South America.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Spiva. He is survived by his children, Leslie Spiva, of Knoxville, Howard Spiva, of Atlanta, Ga. and Nick Spiva, of Nashville, Tenn.; sister, Joy Cragin; companion and close friend, Barbara Shea; and his seven grandchildren.

Tony will be buried in his family plot in Joplin, Mo. Tony was a loving father and will be deeply missed by his family and the many students he taught over his 50 year teaching career.
