JOPLIN, Mo. —
Frances Lea (Fran) Armstrong Corcoran, age 72, of Joplin, Mo., passed away in her Joplin home at 1:45 a.m. on Friday, April 13, 2012, following a long illness.
Born May 24, 1939, in Long Beach, Calif., she was the daughter of the late Navy Chief Petty Officer, Harold Thomas Armstrong, a surviving crew member of the USS Arizona at the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941, and the late Florence Bernice Wright Armstrong. She has been a resident of Joplin since 1981, after sharing a Navy career of 20 years with her husband of 50 plus years, Francis H Corcoran, MD.
A 1956 graduate of Ritenour High School in St. Louis County, where she spent her early years, Fran received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Mo., in 1960. She worked as a Research Chemist at Ralston Purina Corporation in St. Louis from 1960 to 1962. She then chose to start a family and give her undivided attention to the creation of a loving and nurturing home for her husband and children.
After her children were grown, she pursued her many special interests, including world travel, gourmet cooking and entertaining, and breeding, training and exhibiting her award winning Tibetan Terrier and German Shepherd dogs. She also was an active founding member of her investment club, “The Board” for the last 20 years.
Fran was very involved with community activities. A member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Parish of Joplin, she served on the Parish Council for three years. She was a member and President of the Navy Doctors‚ Wives Club of Washington D.C. while her husband was stationed at Bethesda Naval Hospital. After moving to Joplin, her community activities included PEO, the Joplin International Piano Competition, American Heart Association “Home Is Where the Heart Is” benefits, and the Jasper/Newton County Medical Alliance.
She is survived by her husband; four children, Julia, Francis (Chip), Kathleen, and Brian; as well as her eight grandchildren, Alyssa, Megan, Katelyn, Alexandra, Mariana, Laura, Paloma, and Jacob; and her brother Floyd Armstrong of Washington, Mo.
Family and friends are invited to a celebration of her life at Fran’s home at 5594 Rivercrest Valley Drive in Joplin on Monday, April 16 from 2 to 8 pm. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Peter’s Church , 812 South Pearl Avenue, Joplin at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday April 17. Rev. J. Fridel, Pastor of St. Peter’s, and Rev. Valery Burusu, of Mercy Medical Center, Joplin will concelebrate the Mass. Pallbearers will be Fran’s four children, Julia, Chip, Kathleen, and Brian, and close friends Michelle Obermeyer and David Ross. Interment will follow in Osborne Cemetery in Joplin.
