W.L. "Junior" York

JOPLIN, Mo. — W.L. "Junior" York, 90, of Joplin, Mo., formerly of Columbus, Kan., passed from this life on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014, at Freeman Hospital, Joplin.

Junior was born on May 23, 1923, in Joplin, to the union of Walter Lewis and Nellie Rose (Eddington) York.

He was united in marriage on Nov. 28, 1943, in Pittsburg, Kan., to Henrietta (Chancellor) York.

Junior farmed throughout his life and to him it was more than a job, it was his life. Junior was a member and Past Master of Prudence Masonic Lodge A.F.&A.M. No. 100. He was a member of the Mirza Shrine and past Chaplain. He was a member of the O.E.S. Chapter No. 110, of Columbus. He was a member of the York Rite and Scottish Rite. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church, of Columbus. He enjoyed hunting, but most of all loved being with and spending time with his wife Henrietta and family.

Junior is survived by his wife of 70 years, Henrietta, of the home; one son, Kenneth York, of Cuba, Mo.; three daughters, Bobbie Westervelt, of Cherokee, Kan., Connie Taft and husband Jack, of Webb City, Mo., and Pamela Evitts, of Carterville, Mo.; three brothers, Robert York and wife, Betty, of Galena, Kan., Gerald York and wife, Shirley, of Pittsburg, and Jim York, of Apache Junction, Ariz.; 14 grandchildren; and several great and great-great-grandchildren. Junior is preceded in death by his parents; one son-in-law, Keith Westervelt; one daughter-in-law, Sheila York; two brothers, Father Harold York and Herschel York; and two sisters, Ruth Hitchcock, and Marie Good.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 4, at Derfelt Funeral Home, of Columbus. Pastor W. Darrell Treat will officiate. Burial will follow in the Park Cemetery. Family will receive friends on Monday evening, March 3, with masonic rites starting at 6 p.m. with visitation to follow until 8 p.m. The family will be at the home of Connie Taft, 1807 N.E. Street, Webb City.
