Mrs. Eck died Thursday, March 28, at Mercy Hospital, Joplin, after a short illness.
Born, May 13, 1930, to Paul and Minnie Flehmer, she was a lifelong Pierce City resident and a 1947 graduate of Pierce City High School. She attended Marymount College in Salina, Kan., and was employed by Murray Auto Service in Pierce City, where she sold Studebaker cars for four years before marrying John Eck on Aug. 20, 1951, at St. Mary's Catholic Church. He preceded her in death on Jan. 15, 1995.
A member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, she had served her church and St. Mary's School throughout her lifetime in many capacities. She also served on the Board of Education of McAuley Regional High School in Joplin, was a 4-H leader for 40 years and inducted into the Missouri 4-H Hall of Fame in 2009.
A self-employed farmer and cattlewoman, she served for many years as secretary of the Southwest Missouri Angus Association, managing many group sales; was a member of the Missouri Angus Association having served on the board of directors and as a delegate of the association to the national convention. She was a lifetime member of the American Angus Association and instrumental in organizing the Southwest Missouri Beef Cattle Improvement Association and named Cattlewoman of the Year in 1980, by her peers. She was a strong proponent of youth in agriculture and attended cattle shows across the United States either as an exhibitor or a supporter of her children and grandchildren.
Over the past 62 years, the progressive farming efforts of she and her husband, John, have been recognized with numerous awards and the herd of registered Angus cattle they developed was named as a Historic Angus Herd in 1983. Together they were honored as Seedstock Producers of the Year by the SWMBCIA in 1985, and Pioneer Angus Breeders by the Missouri Angus Association in 2002.
She is survived by a son, Richard Eck and his wife, Janet, of Pierce City; two daughters, Linda Eck, of Sarcoxie, and Mary Jo Washam and her husband, Rick, of Pierce City; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Additional survivors include her sister, Mary Jennett, of Sarcoxie; and a brother, John J. Flehmer, of Denver, Colo. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Fred Flehmer and Joseph Flehmer, both of Pierce City.
