CARTHAGE, Mo. —
Verne C. McKelvy, 90, of Carthage, Mo., departed this life Friday, March 29, 2013, after a sudden illness.
Verne was born Jan. 7, 1923, to the late Claude and Opal (Potts) McKelvy in Neosho County, Kan.
On Dec. 6, 1941, Verne was united in marriage to Mary Ann Wangler in Chanute, Kan. and to this union five children were born. He worked for Triangle Oldsmobile in Joplin , Mo., for more than 30 years.
After retiring Verne and Mary Ann moved to Albuquerque, N.M., where they operated a Motel Six for ten years, later retuning to Joplin. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, enjoyed fishing and playing bridge.
He is preceded in death by his wife, of 61 years; his parents; one daughter, Brenda Nelson; one brother, Glen Mckelvy; and one granddaughter, Lisa McKelvy.
Mr. McKelvy is survived by three sons, Barry McKelvy and wife, Zenaida, of Chandler,Okla., Allan McKelvy, of Springfield, Mo., Kevin McKelvy and wife, Sheryl, of Carthage, Mo.; one daughter, Melinda Isley and husband, John, of Diamond, Mo.; son in law, Emmett Nelson, of Grove, Okla.; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren; and long time friend and companion, Virginia Rooks.
Graveside services with military honors are scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 3, at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, April 2, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary.
