JOPLIN, Mo. —
Robert A. "Bob" Farrar, age 76, Joplin, passed away at 1:20 p.m. Thursday, April 4, 2013, at a local nursing center after a long illness.
Bob was born April 6, 1936, in Highway Highlands, Calif., to the late Floyd Farrar and Kathlene West Farrar and had lived in the Joplin area the past 20 years.
He served in the United States Marine Corp and retired from the United States Navy after 22 years of service. He worked as a physician's assistant in the prison system in Atlanta Georgia and in San Diego, Calif. He also worked many years as a substance abuse counselor. His life was dedicated to serving others.
Bob was a faithful member of First Baptist Church; the D.A.V. of Joplin; the Marine Corp League; American Legion of Neosho; V.F.W. Post 534 and Joplin Lodge No. 335, AF&AM.
He married Jean Edwards on March 16, 1968, in Batavia, N.Y. She survives at the home.
Additional survivors include children, Leland Lofgren, Kansas, Myron Lofgren and Brian Farrar, Murray, Utah; one brother, Carl Farrar, Oklahoma; several grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and several other extended family members. In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by a daughter, Kaeleen Whitson; and a grandson, Robert Whitson.
Services are planned for Tuesday at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church. Rev. Jamie Tickel will officiate. Graveside services will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Springfield. Full Military Honors will be conducted by the United States Navy. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday at Parker Mortuary.
