Edna Ernestine (Haggard) Tappana

Edna Ernestine (Haggard) Tappana, 92, Marionville, died at 10:14 p.m. Sunday, April 7, 2013, in the Aurora Nursing Center.

Edna was born April 12, 1920, in Jasper County, Mo., to Ernest Jacob Haggard and Ada Gail (Richmond) Haggard. She grew up on a farm near Reeds, Mo., attended grade school at Reeds, graduated from Sarcoxie High School in 1937, and attended Joplin Business College.

Edna married William LeRoy "Bill" Tappana on July 3, 1942, in Springfield, after which Bill served his country as a member of the U.S. Navy SeaBees for three years during World War II. She worked for Eagle Picher in Joplin while Bill was away, rejoining him when he returned to Chicago in 1945. Edna and Bill moved to a farm north of Marionville in 1947. Edna was a homemaker until working as a bookkeeper at Juvenile Shoe Company in Aurora and later as food service supervisor at the Ozarks Methodist Manor in Marionville, retiring in 1985.

Edna's hobbies were cooking, fishing, helping people and spending time with family and friends. Few people will forget her fried chicken dinners, cherry cobbler and strawberry shortcake.

Edna was a member of the Marionville VFW Ladies Auxiliary No. 7566 and Mount Olive United Methodist Church, Marionville. She helped establish the Marionville VFW Clothing Bank and was their voice on the radio for numerous years. Many knew her simply as the VFW Lady.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her loving husband, Bill, who passed away in 2002; and her son-in-law, Gary Lee Eden.

Edna is survived by four children and their spouses, Marilyn (Tappana Eden) and Bruce McCroskey, Marionville, Bob and Jan (Wood) Tappana, Birch Tree, Kathy Tappana, Marionville, and Gary and Kimberly (Held) Tappana, Webster Groves; nine grandchildren and their spouses and five great-grandchildren, James Robert "Bobby" and Michele (George) Eden, Chandler, Logan and Jacob, Strafford; Lisa (McCroskey) and Aaron Bugg, Brighton, Colo.; Amanda McCroskey, Springfield; Elizabeth (Tappana) and Patrick Taylor, Zachary and Jordan, Columbia; Stephen and Amanda (Rumbaugh) Tappana, Sturgeon; Andrew and Jessica (Oliver) Tappana and soon-to-be born Oliver James, Columbia; Lauren Tappana, Los Angeles, Calif.; Daniel Tappana, Columbia; and Allison Tappana, Columbia; sister, Reva Romano and husband, Dan, Kentfield, Calif.; niece, Carma (Romano) LaMorte and husband, Andy, Denver, Colo.; and many other relatives and friends.
