JOPLIN, Mo. —
Harry L. Callaghan, age 81, passed away at his home on Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013, at 7:10 p.m.
Harry was born in Tulsa, Okla. He was educated there and in Oklahoma City, and was subsequently a staff member of daily and weekly newspapers in Bartlesville, Okla., Pine Bluff, Ark., and Neosho, Mo. During his overseas tour of duty with the U.S. Army, he was on the staff of the Stars and Stripes service newspaper that was published in Germany. Harry became publisher and editor of the Delhi Dispatch, Delhi, La. and Trufant Printing in New Port Richey, Fla. Also, for many years, he was general manager of regional shopping malls which included York Mall, York, Pa.; Harrisburg East Mall, Harrisburg, Pa.; Tysons Corner, McLean, Va.; Trumbull Shopping Mall, Trumbull, Conn.; Permian Mall, Odessa, Texas; and Winwood Mall, Odessa. He enjoyed the outdoors and taking care of his kids and grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Betty J. (B.J.) Newton; daughters, Deborah J. Werner, of Paso Robles, Calif., and Heidi L. Webber, of Mustang, Okla.; grandchildren, Ashley Ward, Josh, Megan, Mary and Russell Webber, of Mustang, and Valerie and Edward L. Werner, of California. Harry was preceded in death by his father, Harry L. Callaghan; his mother, Mary Goodman Callaghan Beistle; and two brothers, James R. Callaghan and Jack Callaghan.
Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Hedge-Lewis Funeral Home with a private burial in Newton Cemetery, Delhi, La., at a later date.
