Floyd H. Burrows

BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. — Floyd Hollis Burrows, 80, of Baxter Springs, Kan., passed from this life on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at Freeman Hospital with his family at his side.

Floyd was born Feb. 5, 1933, at Oswego, Kan., to the union of Mack and Agnes (Harrison) Burrows. Floyd attended school until the eighth grade and then went to work to help his family.

Floyd was united in marriage on July 3, 1952, at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Galena, Kan., to Nellie (Niday) Burrows.

Floyd started working on a dozer at the young age of 18 for Labette County. He then worked for O.T. Mapes Excavating, before purchasing his own equipment and was an owner/operator of Floyd Burrows Excavating for many years. Later in his career he sold off his equipment to Martin Livestock of Quapaw, Okla., and started working from 1998 right up until the present.

Floyd was a man of work starting at sun up and not stopping until the sunset. He enjoyed working his cattle and probably considered a hobby as much as he did work. He loved hunting, fishing, gardening and his bird dogs. As a young boy he especially enjoyed noodling with his mother. Floyd loved being outdoors and observing everything from the wild life to the wild flowers. The kids can remember often that he would always be bringing home different flowers or spiders and even armadillos, but the one memory is when he brought home baby skunks that had been orphaned just to help them survive. Floyd out of all of his hobbies and chores always found time to spend with his family, which he loved dearly.

Floyd is preceded in death by his parents; one son, Steve Burrows; one daughter, Marcia Neely; one grandson, Craig Bradford; two brothers, Earl Burrows and Fred Burrows; and two sisters, Flora Kabus and Francis Harder.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Nellie Burrows, of the home; one son, Kip Burrows and wife, Amy, of Baxter Springs; two daughters, Shelley Hartin and husband, Wayne, of Baxter Springs, and Julie Lane, of Miami, Okla.; three brothers, David Burrows and wife, Pat, of Mabank, Texas, Clyde Burrows and wife, Pat, of Columbus, Kan., and Dwight Burrows and wife, Sue, of Quapaw; five sisters, Jeanie Anderson, of Pryor, Okla., Iris Paullus and husband, James, of Holy Lake, Texas, Velma Nickel and husband, Earl, of Chetopa, Kan., Lucy Godfrey, of Baxter Springs, and Joy Delmont, of Columbus, Kan.; 10 grandchildren, Lonnie Dale Bradford, Magen Jean Flynn, Justin Wesley Burrows, Ashley Michelle Fryer, Dylan Gregory Neely, Cpl. Aaron Cable Burrows, Taylor James Messbarger, Duncan Burrows Neely, Trevor Floyd Hollis Burrows and Lucas Niday Linn Burrows; and four great-grandchildren, Karissa Howey, Payton Darnell Bradford, Kaiden Lee Briggs and Bridger Steven Burrows.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, at Derfelt's Baxter Chapel. Larry Secrist and Travis Ford will officiate. Burial will follow in the Pleasant View Cemetery. Family will receive friends on Wednesday, Feb. 27, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Derfelt's Baxter Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Three Angels Broadcasting Network in care of the funeral home.
