Carl E. Sikes

BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. — Carl E. Sikes, 89, of Baxter Springs, Kan., passed from this life on Friday, Aug. 16, 2013, at Quaker Hill Skilled nursing Facility.

Carl was born June 2, 1924, in Baxter Springs, to the union of William and Ella (Ludlum) Sikes.

He married Loretta (Murphy) Sikes on Aug. 5, 1953, in Joplin, Mo. She preceded in death on Feb. 2, 2005.

He served his country proudly in the U.S. Navy and later worked at Gulf Chemical, as well as Yellow Freight as a truck driver, retiring in the early 1990s. Memberships include The Teamsters Union and the local VFW Post No. 408. His passions included playing music on the harmonica, fiddle and guitar. In his younger years, Carl enjoyed hunting and fishing. You could always find Carl either at his house or the barn, which was known as Sikes Barn. Every year he would raise or purchase a hog to butcher with the help of his buddies. Everyone knew of Carl's whole hog sausage. In recent years, every Tuesday, his buddies would pick him up and drive to Melrose, to the Shears Farms, where they would purchase eggs for the week. Throughout the week people often stopped to visit with Carl at his barn and would admire his garden that he grew, which was his pride and joy. When Carl's health kept him from the gardening, Rod and George took it over so he was able to enjoy it while he sat at the barn. Carl always enjoyed having company and talking about the good old days.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and one sister, Alta Greenwood.

Survivors include one son, Terry Sikes (wife, Laurie), of Mountain Home, Ark.; and one brother, Walter Sikes (wife, Barbara), of Baxter Springs.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, Aug. 19, at 2 p.m. at the Baxter Springs Cemetery. Kyle Wade will serve as eulogist. Friends serving as pallbearers include Rod Burns, George Moss, Mike Cassel, John Cassel, Shel Taylor, Paul Griffith, Al Watkins and Dan Yost. Visitation hours will be Sunday, Aug. 18, from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Quaker Hill Activity Fund in care of the funeral home.

Arrangements are under the direction of Derfelt's Baxter Chapel.
