JOPLIN ,MO —
Dorothy Cox passed away peacefully on July 22, 2012, after a year of ill health. Her daughter was at her side when God embraced her soul with love.
Dorothy was born June 20, 1924, in Riverton, Kan., to Koy and Vesta Beaty. She was the sixth of seven children.
After high school she took her civil service exam and moved to Washington D.C. There she met and married William Joseph "Bill" Cox, a local radio personality. They traveled the country, living in California for a time before settling in South Florida, where they started a family and a successful lighting business. They had two children, a son, Kevin and daughter, Claire. She returned to Joplin in 1976.
Dorothy had a great sense of humor. She was very intelligent and enjoyed talking politics. She enjoyed a cold beer and listening and dancing to Van Morrison. She was also a talented artist, whose copper sculptures were featured in the Palm Beach newspaper. Dorothy also enjoyed playing the piano. During her last year she resided at Joplin Health and Rehab where she would play the community piano. She would get so tickled when people waved and said "Hello piano lady". One of her favorite activities was doing the Scram-Lets and word search puzzles in the paper.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Koy and Vesta Beaty; husband, Bill Cox; brothers, Frances Beaty and Henry Beaty; and sisters, Naomi Hittenmark-Miller and June Allison.
She is survived by her two children, Claire Cox-Matthews and Kevin Cox; two grandchildren, Willie Cox and Casey Hickey; six great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Sam and Cooper Beaty.
A celebration of her life is being planned for her family.
In lieu of flowers, I know she would like everyone to do an act of kindness or make someone laugh, on her behalf.
"Hark, now hear the sailors cry. Smell the sea and feel the sky. Let your soul and spirit fly into the mystic."
