Dr. Larry W. Flatt

CARTHAGE, Mo. — Dr. Larry W. Flatt, age 66, Carthage, passed away at 1:45 p.m. Monday, June 10, 2013, at Freeman West Hospital.

Larry was born July 8, 1946, in Ada, Okla. and had lived in the Joplin area since 2005, having moved from Tulsa. He received his PhD in Education from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Larry worked in Tulsa, Okla., for many years in the public school system as an instructor and an administrator. He worked closely with special needs children for many years.  Larry was currently employed as a Professor of Education at Missouri Southern State University, Joplin.

Larry was a member of the Catoosa Lodge #185, AF&AM and the Akdar Shrine Center, Tulsa. He was known as "Poppy" the Clown in the Shriners clown unit and actively volunteered and supported the Shriners Hospital. Locally, Larry supported the Special Olympics and accompanied faculty and students from MSSU to Belize to establish educational systems there. When he found time, Larry enjoyed woodworking, photography, sculpting marine life, and older car restoration. More recently, Larry discovered a love of scuba diving which became the focal point of his vacation time. Because he developed such a passion for it, his family has decided to have Larrys cremated remains transformed into a permanent, living legacy called Eternal Reefs Memorial Reef.  It is a memorial reef that creates new marine habitats for fish and other forms of sea life in areas where coral reefs are in need of propagation and repair.

Larry is survived by his daughter, Shelly Bickle, Cedar Hill, Texas; four grandchildren, Brooklyn Kannada, Kody Kannada, Emmett Bickle, Lauren Bickle; and several other extended family members.

Memorial services are planned for Saturday at 6 p.m. at Parker Mortuary chapel in Joplin, Mo. Members of Webb City Lodge #512, AF&AM will officiate.  The family will receive friends following the services at the mortuary.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Reef Ball Foundation, in care of Parker Mortuary.
