Joseph Oliver

DIAMOND, Mo. — On March 16, 2014, Joseph Oliver, one of our true gentlemen truckers, completed his last run on our earthly highways to travel the treasured streets of gold.

Joseph was proud, but never boastful of his 44 year (1969-2013) and 5 million mile driving career without a single chargeable accident.  Joseph saved countless lives because of his uncanny ability to predict the next move of his preceding driver. He witnessed many accidents on our nations highways and was quick to offer aide to any needy survivors.

Joseph was born on Oct. 16, 1946, in Neosho, Mo., the son of John D. Jr. and Lorraine (Walters) Oliver. They owned and operated Olivers Shoe Store on the North side of the square for over 40 years, 1940-1989. Joseph graduated from Neosho High School in 1964 and entered the National Guard immediately. He completed machinist training at Franklin Tech in 1965, at Joplin and worked at Autotronics and Vickers.

Joseph married Deborah (Johnson) Oliver on Feb. 12, 1966, in Joplin and they celebrated 48 years together, mostly in the Diamond, Mo., area. They have two children, daughter, Stacy Jo Oliver-Skaggs and husband, Lt. Col. Chad Skaggs, Oakton, Va. and son, Joe B. Oliver and wife, Marsha. of rural Diamond, Mo.; three grandchildren, Morgan and Walker Skaggs, of Virginia and foster granddaughter, Summer Estacio, of Diamond; two sisters, Norma Davidson and husband, Jay, Allentown, NJ and Judy Merrell and husband, Tom, Clearwater, Fla. He is preceded in death by his parents and several aunts and uncles.

Joseph was fascinated with all things mechanical.  In the mid 1990s, he helped his son build a racing engine for his late model car and they enjoyed racing at Joplins 66 Speedway. Later, his interests shifted toward boats. He loved driving his Bayliner Runabout and swimming, skiing and camping on Table Rock Lake for over 30 years and Joe and Debby had hoped to retire in Shell Knob in 2014.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 21, at 11 a.m. at the Clark Funeral Home Chapel of Memories with Tony Newby officiate. Interment and Military Honors will follow in the Neosho IOOF Cemetery. Friends may call at the Clark Funeral Home, Neosho on Thursday from 9 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. and the family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.

Contributions in memory of Joe may be made to the Newton County Cancer Council, c/o Clark Funeral Home, PO Box 66, Neosho, MO  64850.

Services are under the direction of Clark Funeral Home, Neosho.
