Joe Gatliff

CARTHAGE, MO — Joe Gatliff, 88, formerly of Carthage, passed away on Sept. 1, 2010, in Corpus Christi, Texas. He was born on May 31, 1922 and was the son of Virgil and Cletys Gatliff. Joe was a lifelong resident of Carthage until moving to Corpus Christi to live near his daughter in December 2009. Joe was a rural mail carrier for 30 years, serving Carthage Rural Route No. 2 and retired in January of 1982. Joe served as an aerial engineer for the U.S. Army Air Corps, 87 Squadron, Ninth Air Force, 438 Troop Carrier Group from Oct. 22, 1942, to Sept. 17, 1945. He was active in Southern France, Normandy, Rome, Northern France Rhineland and Ardennes Central Europe Campaign. Joe was awarded the Purple Heart, seven Bronze Stars and Air Medal among others. Joe married Elsie A "Edge" on Dec. 31, 1945. She preceded him in death on July 8, 1990. Joe is also preceded by his parents; and one brother, Paul Dean Gatliff. Joe is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Nancy Jo Barr, of Corpus Christi, Texas; one sister, Eunice Farmer, of Carthage; one brother, Robert L. Gatliff, of Las Vegas, Nev.; and many nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, at the Ulmer Funeral Home. Internment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Webb City. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Paralyzed Veterans Association in care of Ulmer Funeral Home. Arrangements are under the direction of Ulmer Funeral Home.
