Rev. Wayne Wheeler

CARTHAGE, Mo. — Rev. Wayne Wheeler D.D., 68, Carthage, Mo., passed away on April 20, 2013, at his home following a courageous battle with cancer.

Harold "Wayne" Wheeler was born on July 14, 1944, in Helena, Ark., to the late Doce Wheeler and Daris Horne Wheeler. Wayne was saved at a young age and was called to preach when he was 12 years of age. He lived with his family in West Texas until entering the U.S. Navy on July 27, 1961. He was honorably discharged on June 11, 1965.

Wayne married Kay Cass on Aug. 30, 1969. Three daughters were born to this union.

He later attended the Apostolic Faith Bible College in Baxter Springs, Kan., and earned his honorary Doctorate of Divinity from AFOL. He lived his life preaching the gospel and pastoring churches in Texas, Arkansas, and Missouri. For the last 20 years of his calling, Brother Wayne led Apostolic Faith Church in Prosperity, Mo., touching many lives and winning hearts for his Savior. After retirement, he spent the last few years of his life as an evangelist as his health permitted.

Wayne greatly enjoyed being outdoors, especially when hunting, fishing and camping. He truly enjoyed the mountains in Idaho, and often said he would like to live there in a log cabin, live off the land and maybe hunt bears. He was a guitar player and enjoyed playing and collecting guitars. He worked in construction and owned Wheeler Drywall for several years.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by  a brother, Jerry Wheeler.

He is survived by his wife, Kay Wheeler, of their home; three daughters and their husbands, Cassie and James Shannon, of Austin, Texas, Jenny and Brian Harris. of Joplin, Mo., and Sabrina and Steve Stockton, of Granby, Mo.; two grandchildren, Trey and Lily Stockton; two sisters, Cherry Milburn and her husband, Jimmy, of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Pamela Thayer, of Burkburnett, Texas; two brothers, Charles Wheeler and his wife, Karen, of Denton, Texas, and Ted Wheeler and his wife, Connie, of Wichita Falls; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends who will miss him very much.

Visitation will be from 6  to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 25, at Knell Mortuary. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Carthage First Nazarene Church with Rev. Randy Dalton officiating. Interment will be at 1 p.m. Monday, April 29, at the Missouri Veteran's Cemetery, Springfield, Mo., under direction of Knell Mortuary, Carthage.
