Glen Gaither

BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. —     

Glen Edward Gaither, 86, of Baxter Springs, Kan., passed from this life on Sunday, June 23, 2013, at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin, Mo.

Glen was born Jan. 25, 1927, in Hockerville, Okla., to the union of Roscoe and Opal (Eubanks) Gaither. After graduating high school, Glen served in the United States Army during World War II.

He was united in marriage to Betty Lou (Clogston) Gaither on May 26, 1946, at Columbus, Kan. She preceded him in death on Sept. 12, 1990.

Glen worked as a purchasing agent for McCartney now known as KMT. Glen was an avid golfer and enjoyed spending time at the Baxter Springs Country Club with his buddies, where he was also a member. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 71, of Baxter Springs. He was a member and attended the First Baptist Church, of Baxter Springs. Glen watched football, but enjoyed all sports. He was always looking forward to watching his grandchildren in their next event. He enjoyed bowling and every year he was able, he had a garden. Glen entertained his community during the "Whiz Bang" era of the late 1960s. Followed by several years at Grove's Grand Lake Opry as "Punky G", the "Whistler" and during Christmas time, he became "Santa Claus". He loved a good joke and making people laugh.  

Glen is preceded in death by his parents, wife and one sister, Joan Kinder.

He is survived by two sons, Rocky Gaither and wife, Mary, of Springfield, Mo., and Brad Gaither and wife, Deanna, of Derby, Kan.; one daughter, Glenda Stanley and husband, Joe, of Riverton, Kan.; one sister, Carlene Hensley, of Miami, Okla.; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 27, at Derfelt's Baxter Chapel. Pastor Jeff Street will officiate. Burial will follow in the Baxter Springs Cemetery. Masonic rites will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 26, at Derfelt's Baxter Chapel with visitation to follow.
