James Earl (Jim) Mathis Jr.

ORONOGO, MO — James Earl (Jim) Mathis Jr. went to sleep with Jesus on Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2010, at 8:30 a.m. at his home in Oronogo, Mo.

He was born Sept. 22, 1929, in rural Pryor, Okla., to James Earl Sr. and Mary Abigail Keith Mathis.

Jim worked as a machine operator for Vickers Inc. for 36 years and retired. He worked as a machine operator at Cardinal Scales and retired in 1997. He then drove the OATS van for nine years. Jim served in Japan, while in the Army for three years and in the Air Force Reserves from 1950 to 1959.

Jim married Shirley Richardson Aug. 22, 1964. She survives.

Also surviving is a son, Gregg Mathis and wife, Alisa; son, James E. Mathis III; daughter, Kristy Elliot; grandsons, Jeremy Mathis, James E. Mathis IV and Alexander Mathis; granddaughters, Nicole Mathis, Velshi Mathis, Christina and Octovio Herrera, Marietta Mathis and Madeline Mathis; four great-grandchildren, Garrett, Adriana, Andrés and Aiden; two nephews and one niece.

Jim served a deacon and sound technician in the Joplin Seventh-day Adventist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Betty Gray.

He was cremated. There will be a memorial service to be announced later.
