JOPLIN, Mo. —
Kelly Michele Miller, age 37, of Joplin, passed away on Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Mo., following a courageous battle with cancer.
Kelly was born on Nov. 11, 1975, in Jennings, La., the daughter of Melvin E. and Frances (Lee) Hatten. She graduated from Hollister High School in Hollister, Mo., a member of the class of 1993. She graduated from the College of the Ozarks with a Bachelors degree in Education. She moved to Joplin in 2007, from Branson, Mo. She was employed by the Joplin R-8 School District as a teacher for Emerson Elementary School. In April of this year Kelly was awarded the Golden Apple Award for outstanding teachers in the 3rd-5th grade category. Kelly was a member of the Faith Assembly of God Church. She was a member of the NEA and she was a Zumba instructor.
Kelly married Josh Miller on Oct. 21, 2011, in Joplin. He survives.
Additional survivors include, two sons, Carson Adam Lawrence and Cole Thomas Lawrence, both of the home; her parents, Melvin and Frances Hatten, Hornbeck, La.; two sisters, Karen Hatten, Hornbeck, La., and Kayla Whitehead and husband, James, Branson, Mo.; a niece, Avery May Whitehead; and numerous extended family members.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Faith Assembly of God Church, 7211 East 32nd Street, Joplin. Rev. Larry Griffin will officiate. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at Mason-Woodard Chapel.
Memorial contributions may be given to The Great American Gift Exchange in care of the mortuary.
