Leonard James "Jimmy" "Big" Haner, age 59, Carterville, passed away at 9:56 p.m. Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at his residence.
Jimmy was born July 12, 1953, in Bartlesville, Okla., to the late James R. Haner and Emma L. Fencer Haner and had lived in the Joplin area most of his life.
Jimmy graduated from Webb City schools. He worked as a construction worker and was a 25 year member of the Union. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing. His true passion was for smoking meat. He built his own smoker and over the course of 35 years, fine tuned his methods and even created his own sauce. He entered many cooking contests and walked away with several awards and trophies.
He married Jannell Pierce on July 16, 2009 in Carthage. She survives at the home.
Additional survivors include a daughter, Maranda Haner, Springfield; a son, Cody Haner, Neosho; one brother, Kenneth R. Haner, Tuscon, Ariz.; one sister, Erma Haner Coble, Webb City; three grandchildren, Madison Pierce, Neck City, Gage M. Pierce, Neck City, Airiauvae Haner, Springfield; and several extended family members and many friends.
Services are planned for Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Parker Mortuary. Rev. Joe Morris will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday at Parker Mortuary.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Joplin Elks Lodge #501, in care of Parker Mortuary.
