Shirley A. Hickman

PITTSBURG, Kan. — Shirley Ann Hickman, 78, of Pittsburg, passed away at 12:45 a.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2014, at Via Christi Village, Pittsburg, Kan.

She was born May 11, 1935, at Girard, Kan., the daughter of Vern and Olive (Ensch) Thomas. She graduated from St. Marys High School.

On June 5, 1954, she married Herbert H. Hickman at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Pittsburg. He survives of the home.

Mrs. Hickman worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company as a telephone operator and then as a homemaker. Membership was held in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and the St. Marys Alter Society.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Cynthia A. Roberts and her husband, Dale, of Ft. Scott, Kan. and Vicki L. Wilbert and her husband, Mike, of Pittsburg, Kan.; two brothers, Tom Thomas and his wife, Ann, of Pittsburg and Jim Thomas, of Maryland; four grandchildren, Brett Roberts, of Ft. Scott, Danielle Roberts, of Ft. Scott, Brian Wilbert and his wife, Tara, of Pittsburg and Julie Wilbert, of Kansas City, Kan.; two nephews, Tom Thomas, of Pittsburg and Steve Thomas, of Kansas City. She was preceded in death by her parents; and an infant son, Scott Thomas Hickman.

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday (April 12) at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Pittsburg, with Father Chad Arnold as celebrant. Inurnment will be at a later date in the National Cemetery in Ft. Scott. The parish rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Brenner Mortuary in Pittsburg where the family will receive friends following the rosary until 7:30 p.m.

The family suggests memorials to the S.E.K. Humane Society, Our Lady of Lourdes Memorial Fund, and/or Alzheimers Association. These may be left at or mailed to the Brenner Mortuary, 114 E. 4th St., Pittsburg, KS  66762.
