Johnnie A. Yocum

REPUBLIC, Mo. — Johnnie Alton Yocum, age 64, of Republic, Mo., passed away on April 25, 2014, after a long battle with cancer. John was born on Sept. 1, 1949, in Joplin, Mo.

Raised in Baxter Springs, Kan., he became distinguished by his service as a United States Marine, enlisting at the age of 17 and being retired as a Disabled American Veteran, two short years later. He was also an auctioneer.

John was united in marriage to Barbara N. Phillips on Nov. 3, 1976. He re-entered public service in 1986, first as an Alderman, then as Mayor of Republic, Mo. He retired from public service in 1992. He was a lifetime member of Gate of the Temple Masonic Lodge #422, the Scottish Valley of Joplin, and the Abou Ben Adhem Temple of the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine in Springfield, Mo. He was honored to be appointed Honorary Aide to the Potentate in 2014.

John loved his sweet tea, his wife's excellent cooking, hard work, going to deer camp, helping crippled children, playing cards and watching wildlife. He was of the Catholic faith.

He is survived by his wife, and steadfast caregiver, Barbara N. (Phillips) Yocum; his sister, Mona (Yocum) Boerngen and husband, Jim Boerngen, of Joplin; two brothers, Michael Yocum, of Las Vegas, Nev. and Gilbert Yocum and wife, Sherry Yocum, of Shelby, N.C.; two daughters, Tammie (Yocum) Robbins and her husband, James Robbins, of Brenham, Texas and LaTisha (Yocum) Wooten and her husband, Tim Wooten, of Springfield, Mo.; his son, MSgt. Brit Yocum, USAF and his wife, Stacey (Deragowski) Yocum, of San Antonio, Texas; many nieces and nephews; five grandchildren, Tylor Wilkinson, Shea Yocum Robbins, Bailey Michelle Yocum,  Rhead Yocum Robbins, Saylor Jay Wooten, and his "little buddy" Dustin Marsh; along with numerous other friends and family. He was preceded in death by his father, Alton Charles Yocum and his mother, Ruth Marie (Alsup) Yocum.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29, in Meadors Funeral Home, Republic. The funeral service, with Masonic Rites, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 30, followed by burial, with military honors, on the Missouri side of the Seneca Cemetery, Seneca, Mo.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
