Philip F. Rogers

JOPLIN, Mo. — Philip F. "Jazzman" Rogers, age 70, of Joplin, passed away Friday, Jan. 4, at 1:45 p.m. at his home with his wife and family by his side.

Phil was born Aug. 20, 1942, at St. Johns Hospital to Edward F. Rogers and Ruth (Beeler) Rogers in Joplin, Mo.

Phil moved to Des Moines, Iowa, where he started grammar school. At the age of eight, he relocated to San Antonio, Texas. At the age of 14, moved to New Orleans where his love of the performing arts began. After graduating from East Jefferson High School, New Orleans, he attended Joplin Junior College. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1964, serving four years, with an 18 month tour of duty in Vietnam. Phil resided in Houston, Texas for 16 years.

On Feb. 23, 1980, Phil married Shelly Richardson, of Joplin. After residing in Houston for one year, they returned to Joplin, Mo.

Phil retired from Magic Media in April 2009, due to health issues. He loved the outdoor advertising business and served as the land leasing manager. Phil was a member of the Joplin Elks Lodge #501 and served as Exalted Ruler from 1989 to 1990. Phil loved the lodge and his lodge brothers. He loved playing the saxophone and played in various bands in the four state area with his tour ending with the 32nd Street Band.

He is survived by his wife, Shelly Rogers; his twin brother, Mike Rogers and wife, Diane, Joplin; and brother-in-law, Dan Richardson and wife, Ruth, of Grove, Okla; Several nieces, nephews, cousins; and two very special cousins Melba Caldwell and Twyla Caldwell. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Nancy Niles and husband, Gary Niles.

The family would like to thank Avalon Hospice for the compassion, dignity and loving care given to Phil during his illness, especially his nurse Diana and aides Melissa and Melissa.

Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary, Joplin. Burial will be in Saginaw Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. at the mortuary. Roger Hasselquist, Chaplain and Randy White, Minister will officiate. Pallbearers will be Ken Johnson, Mitch Stephens, Dan Richardson, Jack Davidson, Shane Rogers, Ron Niles, Ted Beeler and Steve Niles.

Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made in Phils name to Joplin Elks Lodge #501 Christmas Basket Fund or Avalon Hospice in care of the funeral home.
