Juanita Lee York, age 90, went to her heavenly home Jan. 5, 2013, following a brief battle with cancer. She passed away at home attended by her loving family.

Juanita was born in Shawnee, Okla., May 11, 1922, to Grace and Charles W. Ross.

Juanita was preceded in death by her husband of almost 70 years, Bert York.

Juanita was a devoted minister's wife and homemaker. She was employed by Sears and worked in stores in Oklahoma and California for 30 years. Juanita had gifts of compassion, hospitality and generously gave of her time and energy in ministry with her husband. She loved teaching young adults, ministering to families and for many years taught preschoolers. Juanita had a servant's heart and faithfully served the Lord all of her life. A special ministry she enjoyed was writing encouraging notes to others. She loved gardening, traveling, cooking, music and was an amazing seamstress. Juanita took special delight in her grandchildren and prayed for them daily.  Juanita's love for others led her to volunteer at Mission Joplin, at Forest Park Baptist. She worked faithfully in the clothing house of Mission Joplin until her health declined. She was a member of Forest Park Baptist and loved her Life Group, New Beginnings and Joy Club.

Survivors include her daughter, Sue York and her daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Bob Worley. Grandchildren include Darcy Johnson, Dave Worley, Dee Ann Gray, Debra Salsman and Delyn Worley. Great-grandchildren include Jonathan, Chris and Emily Gray, Joshua and Tyler Newlon, Brooke Salsman, Andrew and Aaron Johnson. One great-great-grandson is Saelac Newlon.

A celebration of Juanita's life will be held at Forest Park Baptist Chapel at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 10. Ministers presiding are grandson-in-law, Steve Gray, pastor of First Baptist Church, Wahiawa, Hawaii, grandson-in-law, Bruce Salsman, Eagle Heights Baptist, Harrison, Ark., and Pastor John Swadley, of Forest Park Baptist. Music will be provided by granddaughter, Dee Ann Gray. Pallbearers will be Toy Phillips, Jim Gilbert, Bob Dotson, Don Brown, J.B. Varndell and Rex Black. The family will receive friends at Simpson Funeral Home in Webb City, Wednesday, Jan. 9, between 5 and 6 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution may be made to Mission Joplin, at Forest Park Baptist.

Arrangements are under the direction of Simpson Funeral Home in Webb City.
