JOPLIN, MO —
Mr. John E. Hannon, 77, of Joplin, Mo., departed this life on Monday morning, Jan. 7, 2013, after a brief illness.
John entered this life on July 25, 1935, in Decatur, Ill., to the late Walter and Kathleen (Phalen) Hannon. He was raised in Ivesdale, Ill., along with his brother, Bruce Hannon; his sister, Ellen (Hannon) Wolfenburge; and his late sister, Susan (Hannon) Gorman. He attended the University of Illinois in Champaign, Ill., graduating in 1958 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering.
On Nov. 8, 1958, he was united in marriage to Virginia Ruth Burgener and to this marriage were born six children, Belinda Fero (husband, Tom), Timothy Hannon (wife, Tracey), Peter Hannon (wife, Julie), Daniel Hannon (wife, Judy), the late Julie Hannon and Nancy Green (husband, Brent.
Upon graduation from college, he worked for USI in Tuscola, Ill., as an engineer. In 1967, he moved with his family to Painted Post, N.Y., to work as an engineer for Ingersoll-Rand. He moved with his family again in 1979 to Joplin, when he took a leadership position at McCartney Manufacturing in Baxter Springs, Kan. Over the next years until he retired he worked at Diesel Supply in Joplin, Aggressive Engineering in Galena, Kan., and Waterjet Services in Joplin. He attended St. Mary's Catholic Church in Joplin, was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 979 and served in a number of capacities in the Village of Silver Creek government. He loved making things and was skilled at construction, furniture building and carving. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing with his family and friends.
Extended family includes grandchildren, Matthew Fero, Emily Fero, Abby Fero, Luke Hannon, Laura (Hannon) Brinkmann, Jamie Hatfield, Taylor Hannon, Kyle Hannon, Melanie Hannon, Alex Green and Allison Green. He also has six great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of other family and friends.
Memorial services for John are at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Joplin.
The family is requesting that there be no flowers, but donations may be made to the Knights of Columbus' Father Harter Council 979 Building Fund.
