Jim Onstot

JOPLIN, MO — James Allen Onstot, age 85, Joplin, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, at his home after a sudden illness.

Jim was born June 15, 1927, in Ponca City, Okla., son of the late Roy and Marie Onstot.

He graduated from Ponca City High School in May of 1945. He then served in the United States Navy during World War II. Jim attended Oklahoma State University before graduating in 1951, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business, from the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa.

He married Jane Trowbridge on April 16, 1955, in Ponca City.

He worked for Conoco Oil Company as a salesman and traveled throughout the Midwest. He owned and operated Onstot Oil Company on South Range Line in Joplin until 1970. He then opened Ozark Athletic Supply in Joplin. It continues to do business at 1222 South Main Street, Joplin.

Jim was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge. During his early years in Joplin, he was a member of the Joplin Jaycees, Joplin Exchange Club and First Community Church. He attended Faith and New Hope Church in Carterville, Mo.

In addition to his wife of 57 years, Jane, Jim is survived by his four children, Susan Steen and her husband, Danny, of Independence, Mo., Jim and his wife, Lori, of Seneca, Mo., Steve and his wife, Lynn, of Joplin, and Sandy Onstot, also of Joplin; and grandchildren, Blake Onstot and wife, Stephanie, Shaye, Callie, Sarah and Monica Onstot and Aaron and Katie Steen.

Funeral services will be Thursday, Jan. 17, at 2 p.m. in Parker Mortuary Chapel with Pastor P.J. Hutchinson officiating. Interment will follow in Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery with Steve Chew, Bill Ideker, Joe Sill, Eddie Kunce, Cody Hilburn and Reed Madison serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Chew, Phil Chew, Carl Richard, Bob Warden, Alex Bourne, Bill Scearce and Jim Huddleston. The family will receive friends at Parker Mortuary on Wednesday from 6 to 7 p.m.

The family ask that memorial contributions be made to the charity of your choice.
