Area pools ready for plunge; Schifferdecker opening still to be announced

Though this week’s mild temperatures may not signal swim season, most area pools are ready anyway. And, the mercury should rise a little this weekend to help those anxious to dive in. Highs will be in the low 80s today and Sunday. There is a chance for isolated thunderstorms on Monday, but the thermometer should hit 82 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

DES MOINES, IA —

Helen Loraine Farmer, 90, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, Luther Park Trinity Care Center.

She was born July 18, 1922, in Nevada, Mo., to Winfield and Elsie (Reeves) Thomas.

Helen married Edward E. Farmer in 1941, and they were the parents of two children.

Helen is survived by her daughter, Jean (John) Olson, of Mitchellville, Iowa; son, Jim (Marie) Farmer, of Johnson, Iowa; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Burial will occur at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, in Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery, Joplin, Mo.
