Mary Ellen Smith

NEOSHO, MO —

Mary Ellen Smith, 97, Neosho, Mo., went to her heavenly home on Feb. 1, 2013, after two years of failing health.

She was born Jan. 26, 1916, in Neosho, the youngest of three children born to Alfred James and Anna ( Pawling Bard) Bishop, her father was a shoe repairman and her mother a homemaker. Mary Ellen grew up in Neosho and attended Neosho Schools, graduating as valedictorian of her senior class and following graduation, attended business college and returned to Neosho, to work as a secretary and bookkeeper.

While working at Phil Ratliff Feed and Farm Store, she met Raymond Smith who became her husband in 1941. Following World War II, Raymond returned and opened his own business, Ray Smith Feeder Supply and Mary Ellen worked as his bookkeeper for many years. Mary Ellen and Raymond were married for 70 years and truly enjoyed being together; Raymond preceded her in death on Sept. 9, 2012. Mary Ellen was a devoted wife and mother and she and Raymond enjoyed their family and friends.

She was a devoted member of the First Christian Church in Neosho.

She is survived by a son, Dennis R. Smith and wife, Judith (Pollock), Tulsa; a daughter, Joan Martin and husband, Dr. Clarence Martin, Neosho; two grandsons, Raymond B. Smith and wife, Keri and Howard T. Smith; two granddaughters, Sarah K. "Kate" Martin and Rebecca E. Martin; and two great-grandchildren, Benjamin R. Smith and Rebecca B. Smith. In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by two brothers, James B. Bishop and Edward C. Bishop.

Services will be Saturday, Feb. 2, at 2 p.m. at the Clark Funeral Home Chapel of Memories. Rev. Al  Gritten will officiate. Interment will be in the Neosho IOOF Cemetery and serving as pallbearers will be Robert Allen, Fred Boatright, Bill Crowe, Kevin Hatfield, Harvey Lakin and Gene Young. Honorary pallbearers will be Ken Swabby, Theo Coulter, Jerry Sherwood and Murice Cohu.

Contributions in memory of Mary Ellen may be made to the First Christian Church in care Clark Funeral Home, P.O. Box 66, Neosho, MO 64850.

Arrangements are under the direction of Clark Funeral Home, Neosho.
