JOPLIN, Mo. —
Dr. Chester I. "Chet" Long, age 65, Joplin, passed away at 8:47 a.m. Sunday, May 12, 2013, at his home after a courageous battle with ALS.
Dr. Long was born April 21, 1948, in Colorado Springs, Colo., to the late Chester Long II and Patricia Younger Long.
He worked for Freeman Health Systems as an emergency room physician, retiring in 2011. Chet was a faithful member of St. Mary's Catholic Church serving as a lector and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his wife, Karen, of the home; children, Randall Friend and his wife, Shauna, Webb City, Brent Long, Joplin, Mark Long, Springfield, Josh Friend, Carterville, Leigh-Ann McGhee and her husband, Shoji, Springfield, and Zachary Friend, Joplin; his sister, Janet Bell and her husband, Kevin, Springfield; best friends, Bette and Le Geisler, Webb City; and his grandchildren, Gunnar Friend, Fisher Friend, Tucker Friend, Liam McGhee, Eva McGhee, Gabe VanWinkle and Caleese Long.
A funeral Mass will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church. Rev. Justin Monaghan will officiate. Interment will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Randy Friend, Zachary Friend, Josh Friend, Brent Long, Mark Long and Le Geisler. The Rosary will be recited Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Parker Mortuary. There will be a visitation immediately following.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent DePaul Society at St. Mary's Catholic Church; or to the St. Mary's Catholic Church Building Fund, both in care of Parker Mortuary.
