Lawrence I. Miller

JOPLIN, Mo. — Lawrence Irwin Miller, age 91, Joplin, passed away on Sunday, July 14, 2013, at Freeman West Hospital after a sudden illness.

Lawrence was born Oct. 27, 1921, in Cassville, Mo., son of the late A.M. Miller and Lula Irwin Miller. He graduated from Cassville High School and worked for a brief time before joining the United States Army. He served during World War II in the Asiatic and Pacific Theaters and received  several commendations.

He returned to Cassville, where he married Evelyn L. Mandell on Feb. 12, 1949. He then rejoined the Army, where he was stationed in Ft. Smith, Ark. He served a total of 23 years and retired in 1967, as a Sergeant First Class, E-7. During his service he was awarded two Commendation Medals, two Bronze Stars (battle) and served in New Guinea, the Philippines, Germany, and the Panama Canal Zone. He was also awarded the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation for his service in the Philippines.

After retiring from the Army, he moved to Joplin in 1966 and began his employment with the Missouri State Highway Patrol. He worked as a Commercial Vehicle Inspector for 10 years before transferring to become a Driver Examiner, which he did until his retirement in 1985.

He was a member of the Cassville Masonic Lodge #383 A.F. & A.M. for over 50 years, the Cassville American Legion, and was baptized at Blendville Christian Church of Joplin. He was loved by his family, and he adored them, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed putting out a garden, and was very particular about his tomatoes. He enjoyed attending his son's sports activities, and loved to go fishing, especially with his late son, Steve.

In addition to his parents, Lawrence was preceded in death by his son, Steve Miller; a brother, Harold Miller; daughter-in-law, Carol Miller; and a brother-in-law, Don Campbell.

Survivors include his wife, of 64 years, Evelyn; daughter, Judy Heiniger and husband, Bob, of Joplin; son, David Miller, of Joplin; five grandchildren, Christi Anglin and husband, Ray, Dustin Miller, Desiree Miller, Jennifer Boatright and husband, David, and Janel Miller; 10 great-grandchildren, Tatum, Claire, Sophie, Tahva, Devien, Destinee, Mycah, Paisly, Aubrie, and Brooklyn; a brother, Hal Miller and wife, Wilma, of Cassville; a sister, Lotsee Campbell, of Owasso, Okla.; sister-in-law, Betty Miller, of Cassville; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Thursday, July 18, at 2 p.m. in Parker Mortuary Chapel with Dr. Phillip McClendon officiating. Interment will follow in Osborne Memorial Cemetery with family serving as pallbearers, and full military honors. The family will receive friends at Parker Mortuary on Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Missouri Conservation Heritage Foundation (MCHF), or the Disabled American Veterans.
