Margaret S. Morgan

CARTHAGE, Mo. — Margaret Speer Morgan, age 92, passed away July 18, 2013, at 6 p.m. at her home in Carthage, Mo. Her family was at her bedside.

Margaret was born in Minneapolis, Minn., to Clarence Ellsworth and Clara Benesh Speer, on Jan. 25, 1921. When Margaret was two, the family moved to Des Moines, Iowa, where both Clarence and Clara were born. From Iowa, Margaret and her parents moved to Kansas City, Mo., where she spent her childhood. She graduated from Border Star School and then Southwest High School in 1938. The family moved to Webster Groves, Mo., as Margaret began her college education at the University of Missouri at Columbia. She graduated in 1942, with a B.A. in journalism. While attending the University of Missouri, she met her husband of 41 years, Claude (Hoop) Morgan, Jr. They were married at Ft. Hood, Texas, where Claude was stationed during World War II. After the war, the couple moved to Claude's hometown, Carthage, Mo. Claude passed away in 1983.

Margaret was always the perfect lady. Extremely loyal to her family and friends, she was highly regarded and dearly loved in return. She created a home life that nourished and encouraged three children to successful adulthood. Dubbed, The English Gardener, as she believed the more you planted the less you weeded, her garden flourished an artful palette of her favorite colors, and was a source of great pleasure for viewing and strolling. Her own favorite interests included painting, working with clay, and playing bridge.

During her lifetime, Margaret was a dedicated member of her community, involved with many groups. She was a member of the Grace Episcopal Church, St. Catherines Guild, Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, Mimosa Garden club, Thursday Club, Montré Investment Club, The Shakespeare Society, The PEO Sisterhood, The United Way, Broadview Country Club, and was a Boy Scout den mother and a Lady Rotarian.

She is survived by one daughter, Deborah M. Putnam, of Carthage; two sons, Claude (Hoop) D. Morgan, III and wife, Hope, of Wilmington, N. C. and Michael Speer Morgan and wife, Karen, of Tulsa, Okla.

Also surviving are grandchildren; and great-grandchildren, Timothy Putnam and wife, Julie and their sons, Miles and Maxwell, of Nashville, Tenn.; Andrew Putnam, of Nashville; Claude (Sam) Morga, IV and wife, Brandi and their sons, Davis and Larson, of Denver, N.C.; Thomas Morgan and wife, Dan Li and their daughter, Lilian of Brooklyn, N.Y.; Amelia Boisseau and husband, Andrew and their sons, Huntley, Henry, and Wells, of Dallas, Texas; Barrett Conway and wife, Caroline, and their children, Linnéa and Oliver, of Heidelberg, Germany; Brie Conway, of Brooklyn; Misha and husband, Brad Cain and their children, Rachael and Adam, of Broken Arrow, Okla.; Jenny and husband, Dave Keglovits and their children, Sarah and Kelly, of Tulsa; Amber and husband, Fred Sauer and their children, Archer and Skyler, of Los Altos, Calif.; Joel and wife, Andrea Allen and their children, Ben and Lauren, of Edmond, Okla.
