James F. Bard

DUQUESNE, Mo. — James F. Bard, age 95 ½, departed this life Wednesday, July 10, 2013. He is now at rest awaiting the resurrection.

James was born Jan. 8, 1918, in Douthat, Okla., the son of the late C.O. And Mittie (Hayes) Bard. He was a lifetime area resident.

James was united in marriage to Ozella L. Graves in Girard, Kan., Nov. 22, 1936. She preceded him in death on Sept. 14, 2010.

He was converted during a revival at the Apostolic Faith Church in Prosperity, Mo., in 1950. He, with wife Ozella, attended the Original Apostolic Faith Church on East 4th Street in Joplin, Mo., where he was a charter member. He was a faithful servant of the Lord. He enjoyed being a pilot and flying his own plane. James also took pleasure in traveling with his wife, as well as camping, fishing, and hunting with his birddogs. In later years, he enjoyed handing out Tootsie Roll Pops to those he met and using them as an opportunity to witness to people about how the Lord had blessed him.

In his early years of work he was employed by and traveled for the Ohio Oil Company. He then went into business for himself in the service and installation of gasoline service stations.  During the war he worked as a general foreman for Delta Ship Building Company in New Orleans, La. After the war, Bard and Bard Company was formed and James went into business with his brothers. He was also a partner in the Bard Oil Company.

James built his family a house in an area east of Joplin and moved his family to their new home in October 1953. April of 1959, he served on a committee that established the area in which he now lived as the Village of Duquesne and went on to serve on the first Board. In April of 1994, he ran for the Village Council again, won a seat and was chosen by Council to serve as Chairman of the Board. In October of that same year, the Council decided to begin a police department for the Village. The first office housing the Police Department was located at 800 S Duquesne Road. As Chairman, he was instrumental in procuring land and building the City Hall building which now stands at 1501 S Duquesne Road. He was the first Police Commissioner for the Village of Duquesne and served in that capacity until 1996. James resided at 2424 S Duquesne with his wife until her passing. He continued to live there until the May 2011 tornado took his home. After the tornado, he lived with his daughter, Janet and her husband, until his passing.

He is survived by one son, Jim Bard and wife, Kathy, Seneca, Mo.; three daughters, Carol Dewees and husband, John, Seneca, Mo.; Joyce Babst and husband, Bob, Neosho, Mo.; and Janet Stemm and husband, Walter, Joplin, Mo.; 12 grandchildren and spouses; 24 great-grandchildren; with number 25 due in August; and many nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Clay Bard, Jack Bard, Max Bard; and one sister, Bonnie Clanton. He will be missed by many.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, July 15, at Mason-Woodward Mortuary and Chapel. Reverend Johnny R. Arnall will officiate.  Entombment will follow at Ozark Memorial Park Mausoleum. Pallbearers are James's grandsons, Jason Bard, Michael Bard, Matthew Stemm, Andrew Stemm, Robert Babst, and grandson-in-law, Bruce Schroeder. Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 14, at Mason-Woodard Mortuary.

Arrangements are under the direction of Mason-Woodard Mortuary and Chapel.
