Cleon C. Foust

JOPLIN, Mo. — Cleon C. Foust, age 98, of Joplin, Mo. was welcomed home at 4:47 p.m. Friday July 19, 2013.

Cleon was born May 3, 1915, in Atlanta, Kan. Cleon graduated Cum Laude from Pittsburg State University, where he was a member of Sigma Chi Social Fraternity, and Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society. He served as President of the Inter Fraternity Council.

Cleon began his career as a teacher and coach in Oklahoma, Kansas and East Junior High in Joplin, where he coached an undefeated football team. He left teaching to work for Texas Oil Co., followed by over 30 years as Superintendent, and Board Member of Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. Cleon was a lifetime member of the Atlanta Kansas Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite Bodies. He was Past President of the Missouri Cemetery Assoc. and the first male volunteer for St. Johns Hospital Auxiliary.  He was an Elder at First Christian Church of Joplin and a former Elder and Board Member of Oakland Christian Church. He loved sports of all kinds and played football, ran track, and was a member of the undefeated Atlanta, Kan., basketball team that won the State Championship. As an adult, he and his doubles partner won the Joplin Tennis Tournament. Cleon was a champion of young people and a friend to all. Age and stations of life were not relevant to him. He greeted each day with a smile, and a song or wacky poem.  He loved the Lord, his family, raising tomatoes, sports of all kinds, and food. He loved life and lived it abundantly.

Cleon married Bettye Robbins, the love of his life, on Oct. 31, 1941 and she survives. Additional survivors include a daughter, Karen A. Raines and husband, Carl, Wichita, Kan.; a son, Chuck Foust and wife, Kathy; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a sister in law, Lou Ann Key; and nieces and nephews, all of whom will miss his twinkling eyes and bizarre sense of humor. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Doris Caldwell; and two brothers, Claude and Clyde Foust.

Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at the First Christian Church with Rev. Fay Blevins, Rev. Fred Pugh, and Allen Brintnall, Minister, officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the Church. Burial will be private at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorial contributions are requested to First Christian Church of Joplin or Mercy Hospice in care of the Mortuary.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Mason-Woodard Mortuary of Joplin, Mo.
