JOPLIN, Mo. —
Rev. Robert G. McKinzie, age 86, of Joplin, passed away at 7:50 a.m. Tuesday, July 23, 2013, at his home following a two year illness.
Bob was born Sept. 6, 1926, in St. Joseph, Mo., and went to school in St. Joseph. He came to Joplin in 1977, to become Pastor of the Friendship Baptist Church. He also pastored at the Fellowship Baptist Church in Neosho, and the Duenweg Baptist Church where he currently is a member. Following his retirement, Bob was the building manager for the Missouri State Office Building in Kansas City. He and his wife returned to Joplin in 1989. Bob served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving three years in the Pacific. Bob served with both the Shoal Creek and Spring River Baptist Associations. He served as President of the Child Abuse Council in Neosho, as well as a counselor and board member of Crisis Intervention.
Bob married Dathol Ivy on Dec. 24, 1949, in St. Joseph. She survives.
Additional survivors include three daughters, Vickie Pierson and husband, Jay, Albuquerque, N.M., Robin Black and husband, Terry, Ash Grove, Mo., and Kristi Payton, Carl Junction, Mo.; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. His son-in-law, Mike Payton, also passed away Tuesday at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Mason-Woodard Chapel with Rev. Greg Gooch officiating. Burial will follow in the Osborne Memorial Cemetery with Military Honors. Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at the chapel.
Memorial contributions are requested to the Duenweg Baptist Church in care of the mortuary.
