JOPLIN, Mo. —

 

Bernard R. (Bernie) Mitchell, age 70, of Joplin, Mo., passed away at his home 12:46 p.m. on Wednesday, April 11, 2012, after a short illness.

Born Oct. 15, 1941, in Excelsior Springs, Mo., he was the son of the late Earl Van Mitchell and Ora Leah Butterfield Mitchell. After graduating from High School, he received his law enforcement training from Central Missouri State College. He worked as a police officer, private investigator, and at Moores Manufacturing. During the Vietnam War, he served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Joplin Full Gospel Church.

On Nov. 21, 1980, he married Alma P. Choate in Joplin. She preceded him in death on May 29, 2006. A grandson, Randall, also preceded him in death in 2010.

Survivors include a daughter, Rebecca Brewer and husband, James, of Miami, Okla; a daughter, Rachel Miller, of Alba, Mo.; a brother, Rev. Earl Mitchell, of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; four grandchildren, Melissa, Aaron, Elijah and Jacob.

Funeral services will be held 4 p.m. Saturday at Joplin Full Gospel Church, 26th & Indiana Avenue with Pastor John Myers officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Graveside services with military honors will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Fairview Cemetery.
