COLUMBUS, Kan. —
LaVora Mae Boggess Wisdom Stayton, born in Hallowell, Kan., on May 10, 1918, to Harry M. and Zora E. Boggess, went to be with her Lord and Savior on April 27, 2013.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil R. Wisdom, the father of their children and second husband, Theodore R. Stayton.
She is survived by her children, Barbara Tarter Hawkins, of Miami, Okla., Larry (Phyllis) Wisdom, Cantonment, Fla., and Betty (Ed) Schopperth, Papillion, Neb.; two sisters, Naomi Lyra, Florida, and Ula Brown, Miami and California; 11 grandchildren, Denise Tarter, Virgil Tarter, Jeff Tarter, Shawn (Tabrina) Tarter, Kevin (Donna) Wisdom, Vitessa Wisdom, Bryan Wisdom, Karma (Mike) Skinner, Angela (Mike) Davis, Ryan (Gayle) Schopperth and Nicholas (Amy) Schopperth; 21 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
LaVora worked as a nurse's aide in Columbus, Kan., and then attended nursing school and became an LPN. She worked at a variety of hospitals and a nursing home in the Champaign-Urbana, Ill. area, until her retirement at age 62.
During her long life, she enjoyed a variety of artistic interests including designing and tooling leather, painting on canvas and silk, sewing and decorating. Later in life she took up bowling, Bridge, pool and took motorcycle riding lessons. She also enjoyed traveling and her family and most recently danced at a great granddaughter's wedding.
She loved the Lord and made a profession of faith in 1952. She was a church member in LaCenter, Ky., Champaign and Urbana, and Miami.
Visitation will be at 10 a.m. at Derfelt Funeral Home, 132 East Pine, Columbus, on Friday, May 3, with the funeral service to follow at 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery.
