Ivan King

BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. — Ivan O. King, age 85, went to be with his Lord and Savior at 7:41 a.m. Monday, May 6, 2013, surrounded by his family at Freeman West Hospital Joplin, Mo.

Ivan was born Jan. 22, 1928, at home in rural Columbus, to James W. and Josie A. King. He graduated from Riverton High School in 1946.

He was a member of the Parkhill Church of the Nazarene in Galena, Kan. He loved the Lord, his family, his church family and his many friends.

He retired from Yellow Freight in 1985, and was then able to work with cattle- raising, buying, selling and going to the sale barns. Among other things he served as a member of the township board, and the Riverton School Board. One of his greatest pleasures was attending ball games for all of his family and even the joy of playing catch in the yard.

He was married to Betty Ann Mathes on Aug. 6, 1949, in Offerla, Kan., and they enjoyed 63 years of marriages. She survives.

Additional survivors include one sister, Ruth L. King, of Joplin; two sons, Leon King, of Columbus, and Larry (Belinda) King, of Baxter Springs; four daughters, Sondra (Bruce) Davis, of Baxter Springs, Barbara Nicholas, of Joplin, Kathy (John) Cookerly, of Joplin, and Cheryl (Brian) Campbell, of Riverton, Kan.; and one daughter-in-law, Nancy King, of Riverton. Also surviving are 18 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren with two more expected this year. He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Robert Bob King.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, May 9, at Park Hill Church of the Nazarene in Galena, with Rev. Terry Patterson officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Derfelt's Baxter Chapel, Baxter Springs.

Memorial Contributions may be made to Park Hill Church of the Nazarene.
